Why is the book called "Blind Treason"?

The title reflects the dual betrayal at the heart of this story. First, I was literally blinded — shot in the face with a laser that damaged my vision and left me in permanent pain. But more profoundly, I was betrayed by my own government through what I can only call "blind treason" — a willful blindness to justice, accountability, and loyalty to those who serve. Washington chose to look the other way, to remain blind to an act of war against an American officer, prioritizing political convenience over the truth. The "treason" isn't just what happened to me — it's the betrayal of every principle the uniform is supposed to represent.

Is Blind Treason a true story?

Yes. Blind Treason is a factual account of events that occurred on April 4, 1997, and the cover-up that followed. I am a retired U.S. Naval Intelligence Officer, and everything described in this book reflects my personal experience, photographic evidence, and medical reality of living with the consequences of a laser attack by a foreign adversary.

Why did you wait 29 years to tell this story?

I was legally prohibited from speaking about these events. The incident was immediately classified by the U.S. government, and as a serving Naval Intelligence officer bound by federal law and my security clearance, I could not publicly discuss classified matters without committing a felony. The 25-year declassification rule allowed me to begin sharing this story starting in 2022. I completed my manuscript in November 2024; however, my wife's life-threatening illness took priority.

Can I get a signed copy of the book?

Yes, you can purchase a signed copy of the book on my website.

What happened when you submitted a FOIA request about the attack?

In 2023, I submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Office of Naval Intelligence regarding the April 4, 1997, laser attack. ONI responded that no records of any such attack exist. This is exactly what you'd expect from a successful cover-up — evidence disappears, files vanish, and official memory fails.

How has this incident affected your health?

I have lived with unrelenting, 24/7 pain for over 29 years as a direct result of the laser attack. This chronic condition has been a constant reminder of what happened and has significantly impacted every aspect of my life since 1997.

What was your military background before this incident?

I served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as an Intelligence Officer, rising through the ranks from enlisted to Lieutenant Commander. I'm a "Mustang" officer with experience across aviation, surface, and amphibious warfare operations. My Naval Intelligence career was built on faithful service until this incident derailed everything.

Why would the government cover this up?

An acknowledged attack on a U.S. military officer by a foreign power in American airspace would have required an official response and potentially escalated tensions. It was apparently deemed easier to erase the incident entirely rather than deal with the diplomatic and military implications of acknowledging an act of war.

What evidence do you have that this really happened?

My medical records document the ongoing health consequences I've suffered since 1997. Photographic evidence is irrefutable. The attack also wounded the Canadian pilot. Most importantly, I've lived with the physical and psychological consequences every single day for nearly three decades — that kind of trauma cannot be faked or forgotten.

Are there details you still can't share?

Yes. Some operational details and specifics remain classified for national security reasons. Where ongoing security interests require it, certain information has been omitted or generalized. However, the core truth of what happened to me can finally be told.

What happened to your Naval career after the attack?

My Naval Intelligence career was effectively destroyed. After faithful service and a promising trajectory, I found myself medically retired and abandoned by the very government I had sworn to serve. The cover-up didn't just erase the attack — it erased my future in the Navy.

How do you remember conversations from 29 years ago?

Traumatic events have a way of burning details into memory with extraordinary clarity. Where conversations are reconstructed in the book, they represent my best recollection of words that were seared into my memory by their significance and emotional impact. Some dialogue may not be verbatim, but it accurately reflects the substance and tone of what was said.

What do you hope readers will take away from Blind Treason?

I want people to understand the real cost of government secrecy and the human price paid when inconvenient truths are buried. This isn't just about what happened to me — it's about accountability, honor, and what we owe the people who serve our country. Some truths refuse to stay buried, and this is one of them.

What's next for you after publishing this book?

After nearly three decades of enforced silence, simply being able to tell this story publicly is profound. I'm focusing on my family, particularly supporting my wife through her recovery from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, and building my voice-over career. Blind Treason represents both an ending — the end of my silence — and a beginning — the start of a new chapter where I can finally speak my truth.
